Can faculty give feedback to their students on their essay (and help with editing)? This seems similar to providing input during the design of a competition project. |
Yes. Faculty may advise students but are asked to neither compose themes nor edit written texts. The Prize is intended to encourage students to think creatively on their own. But faculty are encouraged to recommend relevant sources that students may consult in considering their responses to the question posed.

I am an undergraduate majoring in architecture, but I am focusing on urban studies instead of design. Am I eligible to enter the competition? |
Yes as long as architectural design is an aspect of your curriculum. Perhaps, to be sure, let us know about your courses--required and elected.
Should my discussion in some way dirrectly address the Pompidou Center? |
Thank you for your question. No. The essay about Pompidou is there simply to illustrate that the Berkeley Prize Committee believes that contemporary buildings--and those yet to be designed, are potentially of the World Heritage class.
I have a question regarding two person teams. Is it possible for the two students to be from the same university? |
Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, both students may be from the same university, as long as both fulfill the eligibility requirements.
At this moment in time I will be enrolled as a full-time architecture student next year, if my situation changes and I study part-time, would I still be eligible to enter? |
Yes, you would continue to be eligible if you are no less than a half-time student in Architecture (IE, 50% enrolled, Architectural studies).
am i eligible for the competition if i am currently doing a masters program in architecture? the system our university follows for a complete education in architecture is actually 3 years of BA(arch) followed by a year of attachment and subsequently 2 years of M(arch) |
No, as you have now advanced beyond the level of undergraduate studies you are not eligible. Our regrets. Thank you for your interest.
I am a graduate student in architecture. Would I be eligible if I teamed with an undergrad student majoring in a non-arch major (but still in design), say Historic Preservation, Interior Design, or similar program? |
Thanks for the question. But, the answer must be "no". The competition is open only to undergraduate students studying architecture, solo or in a paired team.
We received a note on the student's architecture competition for 2003: "Architecture as a social art". Could you please send us more information about the submission dates. |
Thank you for your inquiry. This year's essay question has been posted on the Berkeley Prize web site (www.berkeleyprize.org), and contestants may submit their 500 word proposal for an essay in Stage One of the competition between November 15 and December 10. For the complete calendar, as well as eligibilty requirements, and the essay question, please visit the Stage 1: To Enter page.
pleae tell me where do i e-mail the essay for the competition to?? |
On November 18, when Stage One is officially opened, you will find the directions for entering your 500 word proposal for the essay online.
For the 1st stage of the competition, is the essay an excerpt from the complete essay we will submit later? |
Thank you for your inquiry. The Stage One essay is a 500 word first draft of the longer 2,500 word essay, and if selected in Stage Two, you will have an opportunity to develop the idea described in the first draft.

I am a fine-arts/ sec. education b.a.graduate (CSULA'75) and nearly finished my m.a.:fine arts. I took a course in architecture, besides extensive art and design courses, through time I have submitted various structural designs.I do have definte ideas about "added value" aspects of modern design. Am I elligible, or do I have to be currently enrolled? |
Thank you for your interest in the competition. We regret to say that you are not eligible to participate. The rule is that only undergradate students who are enrolled full time in an architectural program of a recognized school or department of architecture, are eligible. All the best.
do I write this essay in engilish? could I send it to you both in engilish and persion? I should send it by email to you? |
Thanks for your message. Yes, the essays are written in English. Have you considered teaming up with an English speaking student, either in Iran or elsewhere? Working as a bi-lingual team could be an interesting and informtive experience for both team members.

As a post-baccalaureate student in general studies focusing in architecture, I cannot major in architecture but am enrolled in studio classes with architecture majors. I also work fulltime to pay my tuition and can only take 2 classes a semester-all in architecture. At my instution, 3 classes is full-time enrollment. Am I eligible? |
Thank you for your question. Alas, you are not eligible, as the competition is only open to full time undergraduates who are majoring in architecture.
sirs, I'm an undergraduate arcitecture full time student , I would be glad if i joined your competition but im concerned about how would I prove eligible? Do you need a faculty paper to prove I'm an undergraduate student? If yes , when do you want it ? Thank you |
Thank you for your question. To our knowledge, every student is given an identification number (ID) that is officially recorded and which may be used by others to confirm that an individual is an officially enrolled student in a course of study in that institution. If you are unaware of your number, or of this procedure, please check with your school administrator. We are required to have this information, as only full-time undergraduate students studying architecture are eligible to compete.

what do you mean by the "student ID number" in the account profile ? |

Que veut dire pour vous l'architecture dans les pays sous developpes? (Translation) What do you wish to say about architecture in developing countries?

We welcome entries from all areas of the world, including developing countries, and suggest that you respond to the Question in terms of the opportunities that are available in your region or country in discussing the issues of architectural monuments, world heritage and social values. How many applicants from Stage One will be granted permission to enter Stage Two; or how many applicants from Stage One in previous years advanced to Stage Two? |
Thank you for your inquiry. In previous years, twenty-five Stage One contestants have been advanced to Stage Two, and we anticipate approximately the same number in this year's competition.
We have sent our essay for 2003 competition. When visiting Author home, our review staus is: unallocated. What does this mean? |
Thank you for your question. "Unallocated" means that your essay has not yet been assigned to a reviewer who will read and evaluate it.
Does the essay have to be exactly 500 words long, or can it be anything up to 500 words? |
Thank you for your inquiry. To qualify, the Stage One Essay should be no less than 475 words and no more than 500 words in length.
At the time of entry - tomorrow, I will be an undergraduate student. However I begin my masters' in January therefore at the time of the award and for that matter the second stage I will be registered as a masters' student.
Am I eligible? |
Dear Alison Unfortunately, you may enter while an undergraduate, but as a graduate student you would not be qualified to win. Regrets. All the Best, The Berkeley Prize Committee
Do you realize there are several grammatical mistakes in Benjamin Clavan's introduction? It is a little obnoxious for me to point them out, but it seems quite embarrassing for a writing competition judge not to know the proper usage of 'than' vs. 'then'. |
Thank you for pointing out the grammatical error, as you see it, in Clavan's essay. Regrettably, these things happen in the best of families. All the best to you.
Is there a way to format the text in the essay submission form(italics, bold)? Thanks. |
Thanks for your question. We regret that, to our knowledge, it's not possible to use either italics or bold. However, we will check with our Web Master, and inquire--and if so, shall report.
In the author profile section, I have copied my essay into "My Essay" link. Does that mean I have entered the competition, or do I need to e-mail it directly to somebody at UC Berkeley? |
Dear Tyler Kearns, Nope, you're all set. Good luck.
I have 544 words. Is this definitely too many? |
Dear Martha Sparrow Best edit. The rules ask for no more than 500 words. All the best.
How many people entered last year? |
There were 118 eligible FIRST STAGE essays in last year's competition.
Will I be disqualified for having literally a few extra words? Must I submit the expression of my ideas to such a precise number? |
Dear Martha Sparrow I see we've already answered your question. 500 words is the cut off. And we are obliged to be fair. all the best, RL
The submission form for stage one is still open, so I submitted my essay, (twice, I'm afraid to say, since there was some trouble the first time and I'd rather be safe than sorry) but I'm certain it's too late. Can you please confirm? |
You were successful in submitting. all the best. AG
If I submitted my entry before the deadline, but accidently pressed the update essay button and resubmitted it after the deadline to get back to the page with my submitted essay on it, will I be disqualified? |
If your essay is, in fact, already "on line" then it is possible for you to edit it until 6PM, Thursday December 12, Pacific Coast Time. Good luck. RL
In the author profile there is a section asking for details about a/our "major" - please could you specify what information I am required to give here? |
All contestants must be full time undergraduate students enrolled in accredited schools of architecture. Some schools, today offer a variety of Majors, which may include Design, Ecology, Sustainability, History and Theory and Criticism. We are interested in knowing what each contestant considers her or his major interest as an architectural student.

I am a student of architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, UK. I have submitted for the essay competition this year and would like to confirm my eligibility. In June of 2002 I completed third year and achieved my RIBA Part 1. I am currently doing a practical work experience part of my course required before I can achieve my full RIBA qualifications. I am going to fourth year in September of 2003 for 2 more years of undergraduate academic study and then 1 more year of undergraduate practical experience. My school supports my essay submission and I feel that my experiences and views still reflect that of an undergraduate student - but I am hoping that this is supported and acknowledged by your commission as well!! Please do consider my application and contact me should you need further clarification. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Ema Bonifacic |
If you are an undergraduate until May 2003, when the awards are to be made, then you are eligible. Good luck, Berkeley Prize Committee

Hello- When will the semi-finalists be announced? |
Semi-finalists will be announced Sunday, January 19, 5PM Pacific Daylight Time. The overwhelming and gratifying response to the competition gives the Readers far more work than anticipated. We regret the delay.
Semifinalists are scheduled to be announced today on January 14th. How and when will this take place? As of noon Central USA time, I can find no announcement on this site. Will the winners be directly notified or will you post winning names on the site? |
See FAQ, directly above for date and time of the announcement. But for your query; yes, Semi-finalists will be notified by e-mail. We hope to also post on the site and shall investigate the possibility of doing so. Good Luck. All the best.
If the review portion of your essay still says "unallocated," is it safe to assume you didn't proceed to the semifinals?
No!
Will there be some notification that all second round applicants have been chosen, as my essay review status still remains as unallocated as of the 16 January 03 (Australian EST)? |
Thanks. No notification has been made as Readers' are somewhat overwhelmed by the responses and are requiring more time than anticipated. Semi-finalists will be announced Sunday, January 19, 5PM Pacific Time.
I would like to know when the shortlist for the semifinalists will be announced since it hasnt been announced on schedule nor has it been mailed to any of the participants on the 14th or on the 15th of Jan 2003. |
Hello! most of your question can be answered by reading the FAQ's above. Regret that we are behind schedule. Shall pick up steam and report by Sunday,January 19, 5PM, Pacific Daylight Time.
I am curious when authors, who submitted for stage one, will be notified of their acceptance for stage two. Will we be notified via telephone, mail, or e-mail? |
Notification will be made by e-mail and possibly on the web by Sunday, January 19 at 5PM Pacific Daylight Time. Related questions are addressed in the above FAQs. thanks.
Regardless of whether or not our abstract has been selected to the essay portion of the competition, will we be notified as to its status? I just checked my author profile (Jan.15), and it still stated "unallocated", and nothing had been filled in under the "review status" heading. Thanks. |
Thank you for your inquiry. Semifinalists will be notified by e-mail by 5 PM, Pacific Daylight Time, on Sunday, January 19.
Hello; Me and my partner submitted our essay 06-Dec-02 but have still the mark UNALLOCATED in our profile. What is happening? Is there a delay in the process? Can we find a list of the students in stage 2 somewhere? |
Hi, and thanks for writing. Yes, there has been a delay, and semifinalists will now be notified by e-mail by 5 PM, Pacific Daylight Time on Sunday, January 19 .
i updated my essay a couple of days ago. is the updation valid? |
Without your name I can't trace it. RL
Several people have asked why their profiles say "unallocated," but you have failed to answer why this is the case. Is this not a sign that the essay was never read by anyone? |
Regret the confusion. The term "unallocated" means that the final essay of 2,500 words of the Semifinalists have yet to be allotcated to specific Readers of the Berkeley Prize Committee, for evaluation. This will happen after March 1, once the Semifinalists' essays are in.

when you say "the PUBLIC must be persuaded that there is added value to building buildings much different then most of the architecture being built today" - do you mean the 'archtects' should be made to understand the worth of good architecture else what has the general people got to do with persuasion of the value of building buildings? in short - i am finding the statement ambiguous! please help. |
Good question: We mean that it is up to the architect to persuade his/her public/clients, that it is worthwhile to build buildings of cultural significance.
Is there a way to use footnotes for citations? If not, how would you suggest they be handled? |
Yes, you may use footnotes in your essay.
What is the minimum number of words to be considered for the finalist essay review? What format should we follow in quoting references? Should we include a bibliography or simply in-text citation of the title of the book or article? Thanks for your help, this has been a great opportunity to think outside studio about the studio. |
Dear Luis Bustamante, Thank you for your question. (1) To be competitive, the number of words is 2,500 as stated in the rules of the Second Stage of the Competition. (2) No bibliography is asked for. But as you have suggested "in-text citations" could be useful, especially if you are quoting from a text. Remember, you are writing this essay to persuade non-architects about your idea. This is not an academic paper for scholars.
I noticed the max limit for the second stage essays is 2500 words. Is there a minimun? Also, is there a way that I can submit my essay with all of the punctuation and editing the origional has (ie: quotation marks, paragraph indentions, italics, footnotes)? |
To be competitive, your essay should be 2500 words long. The web submission system allows quotation marks and footnotes, but not italics or paragraph indentations.
2500 is the maximum word count for the final essay. Is there a minimum? |
To be competitive, your essay should be 2500 words long.
I was wondering till when would it be possible to update the essay. Also when you say 2500 words long to be competitive, what kinds of margins are you allowing on either side of that figure to maintain competitiveness? |
You may edit until Stage Two closes, which is Noon Pacfic Time, Saturday, March 1. As for word count, get as close to 2,500 as you can while making the best case you can for your idea.
the stage two deadline is march 1st noon pacific time , when is that by GMT? thank you |
The deadline is 20 hours GMT.
I see that we are to give a title to the full essay. Would it be confusing to use a different title to that used in the original statement? |
Yes, as the full essay is to be an expansion of your short essay, please retain the original title.
When will the winners be announced? Your schedule says on May 1 but obviously there has been some delay, may be you can post a message informing when it will be announced. |
Greetings, there has been a slight delay and the winners will be posted to the website by no later than May 7, 2003.
