Must the photographs be used in answering the Question? |
The photographs suggest to us ways in which the street mediates between private and public lives. These or similar images of your own experience should inspire significant responses to the Question. |
Can faculty give feedback to their students on their essay (and help with editing)? This seems similar to providing input during the design of a competition project. |
Yes. Faculty may advise students but are asked to neither compose themes nor edit written texts. The Prize is intended to encourage students to think creatively on their own. But faculty are encouraged to recommend relevant sources that students may consult in considering their responses to the question posed. |
can you please explain the scope of 'undergraduate'? eg. many architectural programs in the states are designated as 'masters' or graduate level programs. Are these eligible? Presumably post-professional masters degrees are definitely not eligible..... ? |
Only Undergraduate students are eligible. The author must be an ARCHITECTURE STUDENT in either an Undergraduate First Professional Degree Program (in the US, the BArch) or in a Pre- or Non- Professional Degree Program in Architecture. If a team produces the essay, all members must be Undergraduates but may have other academic interests. The Primary Author, however, to whom the award will be made, must qualify as first stated. Also see above, FAQ re: Team Work |
If you are an Undergraduate in the architecture school majoring in urban and environmental planning are you still eligible for this competition, I am extremely interested and would love the opportunity. |
The Berkeley Prize Committee endorses an interdisciplinary response from undergraduates. However, there can be only one registered author, who must be an undergraduate student in architectural design. |

hi, is the 500 words to be a "design manifesto" in response to the question or is it more of a critique of the way the street mediates between private and public space? |
The 500 word "proposal" should be a compelling synopsis of the 2,500 word essay you would write if given the chance. Thanks, Andrea Ling, University of Waterloo, Canada, for your question. |
Does the essay have to simply address the issues concerning street life or can it include plazas? |
Yes, plazas, piazzas, squares, etc. are okay as long as they are public spaces and not an extension of a private commercial or institutional setting. |
I am currently in a one-year ohonor's internship and will return in fall 2002 as fifth year architecture student. Am I eligible for this competition. |

Definitely. You are eligible. |

My essay begins with a poem by Goethe. When submitted, the poem did not show up on the registration sheet...just the title and the credit "---Goethe", followed by the body of the essay. The poem was in the essay as I submitted it, but disappeared. It is an important part of the essay, and reference is made to it in the conclusion. I would appreciate it if someone could look into what happened, and notify me as soon as possible.
Thanks! |

I would like to submit my third year undergraduate dissertation if I reach the second part of this competition, however, my university requires the dissertation to be between 8,000 and 10,000 words. Would this be acceptable? Is it possible to include my own pictures in the initial essay submission, and which format should they be in, Jpeg prehaps? In response to another question you replyed to from England: our diploma here is postgraduate andI think equivalent to other countrys masters, they are 5th and 6th year students, judging by your responses to other students they are not eligble as they are postgraduate. This is contrary to one reply you have already given. |
Semifinalists will be asked to submit essays of no more than 2,500 words, so a longer work would not be acceptable. Photographs are not allowed in Stage One of the essay competition. If you are enrolled in a five year program, i.e., first three years coursework, and last two years apprenticeship, you are eligible to complete. See question number 14 above. |
