Architecture often involves individual expression and an arbitrary application of materials. But architecture is more than the creation of inhabitable sculpture, or an economical manifestation of our disintegrating culture. It has a tremendous everyday cultural impact and influence. Architecture is critically inseparable from the physical site, the life of the community of individuals it serves, and its historical precedent. It is insufficient to retreat into the elitist stance of the formalist architect
